CITY OF SAN FERNANDO—The inaugural Mylyn Pineda Cayabyab Inter-Barangay Basketball Tournament commenced on Dec. 15 at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center here.
All 35 barangays of the city assembled their teams to participate in the tournament, which is slated to continue until March 2025.
The teams have been organized into six clusters, each of which will engage in single-round eliminations, with the top two teams from each cluster advancing to the crossover quarterfinals.
A designated venue has been selected for each cluster’s games, and uniforms have been provided for all participating teams.
After the elimination rounds, a champion will be crowned in each cluster, with the winning team receiving a cash prize of P15,000.
In the subsequent stage, the remaining 12 teams will be re-divided into two groups of six teams each, and another single round robin will determine the semifinalists—comprising the top two teams from both groups.
Mylyn Pineda-Cayabyab, an aspirant for the city mayoralty, has allocated P3,000 per game for each team to assist with incidental expenses incurred during the tournament.
The overall tournament champion will be awarded P100,000, with the runner-up receiving P50,000, the third place taking home P30,000, and the fourth place winning P20,000.
The opening ceremony was attended by team governor Archen Cayabyab of the Converge FiberXers, along with players Kevin Racal, Jeo Ambohot, Justin Arana, Alec Stockton, King Caralipio, and Bryan Santos. Archen is Mylyn’s spouse.
Notable professional Kapampangan players Arwind Santos and Calvin Abueva were also present to support the event.
Mylyn emphasized that the tournament aims to promote the values of sportsmanship and regular exercise among the youth, while also seeking to identify promising Fernandino talents who may represent the city in future national or international competitions. Press release
