The Sacred Heart Medical Center in Angeles City has inaugurated and launched the expansion of the Tan Song Bok Cancer Institute, as part of its 16th anniversary celebration.
According to Dr. Misael Cruz, institute director, the growth of the cancer institute is about more than having a new facility, but about a continued commitment to comprehensive, compassionate, and patient-centered cancer care with a bold vision for the community.
He said the facility started with chemotherapy and radiation therapy in 2010, and is one of the first complete cancer facilities in the region.
Dr. Cruz said that from previously offering only chemotherapy and radiation therapy, the institute now offers a holistic, multi-specialty approach under one roof, including gynecologic oncology, surgical oncology, breast care, pain management, palliative care, and mental health services.
Medical Director Dr. Ma. Josefina Tan, meanwhile, said that the institute not only cares for patients, but their families as well.
She said the institute has expanded its physical space, adding more seats and beds in the chemotherapy unit and increasing its radiation oncology machines from one to two, with a third planned. This expansion aims to reduce patient waiting times, she added.
Dr. Tan said the goal is to provide a “one-stop shop” for patients, from diagnosis to recovery, without needing to go outside the facility.
According to the medical director, the institute’s approach has shifted to cover the entire patient journey, starting with prevention and screening. A new “survivorship program” ensures that patients receive follow-up care and support even after treatment, addressing their needs as they reintegrate into their lives. A patient navigator system has also been implemented to guide patients through their appointments and treatment steps, ensuring a seamless experience within the integrated facility.
