Bishop Mallari chosen to head Tarlac diocese

San Jose Bishop Roberto Mallari has been designated by Pope Francis as the new shepherd of the Diocese of Tarlac.

The Vatican made the announcement on Sunday (Dec. 29). With the designation, Mallari will be transferring to the Diocese of Tarlac to become its fourth bishop.

The 61-year-old bishop will succeed Bishop Enrique Macaraeg who passed away in October 2023.

Mallari, who was born in Masantol, Pampanga, has been the bishop of the Diocese of San Jose since July 2012.

The bishop, who was ordained priest for the Archdiocese of San Fernando on Nov. 27, 1982, served as spiritual director at the Mother of Good Counsel Seminary in Pampanga from 1983 to 1987 and from 1989 to 1994.

He also served as executive secretary of the CBCP’s Episcopal Commission on Family and Life (CBCP-ECFL) from 2000 to 2006.

Mallari was appointed auxiliary bishop of San Fernando on Jan. 14, 2006 by Pope Benedict XVI.

As bishop, Mallari also served as vice chairman of the ECFL, chairman of the Episcopal Commission on Catechesis and Catholic Education, and chairman of the Office of Social Communications of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC).
