SAN CLEMENTE, Tarlac — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is promoting bamboo as a sustainable resource for environmental protection and livelihood opportunities through its greening initiatives in Tarlac.

DENR Regional Executive Director Ralph Pablo emphasized the importance of bamboo in the agency’s greening initiatives, citing its potential to restore degraded lands and provide economic opportunities for communities.

“Bamboo is not only a fast-growing species that helps restore degraded lands, but it also provides communities with economic opportunities. By planting bamboo, we are investing in both environmental protection and local development,” he said.

As part of these efforts, the DENR has incorporated bamboo planting into its greening activities, including the planting of 50 giant bamboo propagules in Sitio Canding in Barangay Maasin, San Clemente, Tarlac.

The activity was conducted through the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Camiling within the LAWIN Efforts in Greening Intervention by Tree Planting area to mark the culmination of the Philippine Bamboo Month celebration.

Aside from planting bamboo in upland areas, the agency also uses the species in developing green spaces, including linear parks.

Supporting the government’s environmental protection and sustainable development agenda under the leadership of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., Pablo underscored that planting bamboo helps provide shade, improve air quality, reduce soil erosion, and contribute to more livable communities.

Meanwhile, CENRO Camiling Chief Amalia Fajardo highlighted the importance of community participation in sustaining reforestation and greening initiatives.

“This effort is more than symbolic. It is a call for collective action to nurture bamboo as a resource for future generations. We thank our partners and volunteers for joining us in strengthening the greening program,” she said.

The DENR continues to encourage communities and local partners to participate in greening activities and support environmental protection and sustainable development efforts.
