Long before the name Alex Eala became synonymous with modern Philippine tennis history, a trailblazer named Maria Soccoro “Marissa” Sanchez paved the way for Filipina athletes on the international stage.
The tennis community recently paused to reflect on her remarkable life and career as the inaugural Marissa Sanchez Memorial Women’s Tennis Open Championship concluded at the Angeles City Tennis Club in Pampanga.
The tournament, as presented by Philippine Tennis Association, stands as a fitting tribute to a beloved sports icon who shaped generations of players.
A Legacy of ‘Firsts’
Sanchez dominated the local and international tennis landscapes during the 1970s. In 1974, she represented the country in the Asian Games held in Tehran, Iran. A year after that she cemented her status as the country’s undisputed top female player after sweeping both the National Open and the Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA) Open.
Her historic milestones for Philippine sports include:
- 1977 SEA Games: Captured the silver medal in women’s singles, becoming the first Filipino to win a tennis medal at the Southeast Asian Games.
- Global Stage: Among the first Filipina players to carry the national colors abroad, competing in the elite Federation Cup (now known as the Billie Jean King Cup).
- 1978 Federation Cup: Powered the national women’s team to a rare and memorable appearance in the tournament’s main draw.
- 1981 PCA Open: Made history as the first female champion of the prestigious Philippine Columbian Association Open.
Photos lining the walls of the Angeles City Tennis Club capture Sanchez standing alongside global tennis royalty of her era, including Grand Slam champions Evonne Goolagong of Australia and Virginia Wade of the United Kingdom.
Before her death last year, Philippine tennis great Dyan Castillejo also paid her a visit, bringing her a jacket of national athletes worn in the 2025 SEA Games.
Mentorship and Community Impact
After retiring from professional competition in the 1980s, Sanchez turned her passion toward coaching in Angeles City—where her own tennis journey began during her high school years. She later served her community as a dedicated sports consultant for Angeles City from 2010 to 2019.
Friends, family remember
Reflecting on her passing, Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Elmer Cato, a nephew of Sanchez, recalled her profound impact. Cato paid tribute to her in a facebook post where most of her feats where lifted from in this news story.
Fellow tennis icon and PHILTA official Castillejo also shared fond memories of looking up to Sanchez as a junior, praising her generosity and encouragement.
“Coming into the tennis scene as a 13-year-old, Marissa was someone | really looked up to as our No. 1 player,” Castillejo said said in a statement on Sanchez’s passing. “Even when she was already a champion and I was just a junior, she was generous with her knowledge and always encouraged me to keep practicing. Eventually, even as competitors, we became good friends throughout our tennis journey.” Castillejo posted at Sanchez’s passing.
Sammy Sanchez, brother of Marissa, now based in the US, expressed elation as he noted her contributions to Philippine sports.
“Our family is glad to note how people remember and honor her through this tournament and through kind words about her,” Sammy said.
The newly established memorial open ensures her spirit, groundbreaking achievements, and decades of mentorship will continue to inspire the next generation of Filipino tennis stars.
The Philta also honored her by posting a post from Jane Globio in the Facebook account of the national sports association for tennis.
