Pampanga Governor Dennis “Delta” Pineda has urged the Kabalens to respect President Ferdinand Marcos’ decision to veto the bill declaring Pampanga as the “Culinary Capital of the Philippines.”
But he admitted that he was saddened by Marcos’ decision. He promised to work with lawmakers for possible bill refiling, which addresses the issues raised by the President for vetoing the measure.
“Bagama’t ako po ay nalulungkot sa pagka VETO ng panukalang batas na nagdedeklara sa Pampanga bilang Culinary Capital ng Pilipinas, sa panahong ito ay humihingi po ako ng hinahon sa aking mga kabalen. Alam ko po na nababahala kayo o galit dahil sa usaping ito,” Pineda said.
“Sa gitna po nito, nananawagan po ako sa aking mga kabalen na igalang po natin ang pasya ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. na huwag pirmahan ang panukala,” he said.
In his veto message, Marcos said the bill “may offend sensibilities in other provinces that are equally proud of their culinary contributions.”
If approved, the bill might also create discrimination, the Palace said.
Pineda said the bill aimed to recognize Pampanga’s rich culinary culture and not to sow division.
“Kinikilala namin ang kahusayan ng iba’t ibang rehiyon sa kanilang lutuin. Ang pagsuporta sa Pampanga ay bahagi ng mas malawak na layuning itaas ang antas ng lutuing Pilipino sa buong mundo,” the governor said.
“Bukas kami sa pakikipagtulungan upang mas mapalakas ang promosyon ng ating pambansang gastronomiya, dahil naniniwala kaming ang pagkain ay nagbubuklod, hindi naghahati sa ating lahi,” he said.
Pineda cited some bills, which were vetoed and later refiled and became laws after addressing certain issues.
“Dahil dito, magsisikap ang Pampanga Culinary Heritage Council at iba pang mga tagapagtaguyod mula sa sekto ng culinary, kasyasayan, at turismo ng Pampanga na tugunan ang mga isyung ito upang maihain muli ang culinary bill,” he said.
