The Jose B. Lingad Memorial General Hospital has scored its first successful cornea donation, marking a breakthrough in harvest and transplantation of the vital eye part in government hospitals.
In its FB post, JBL stated that the donated cornea was transplanted on June 29 to an eligible patient seeking donation at the JBL. The transplant was conducted few days after the Sta. Lucia International Eye Bank (Eye Bank) certified the harvested tissue to be “viable for transplantation”.
“This milestone marks the first corneal transplant made possible through our institution’s corneal donation program, restoring hope and bringing the gift of sight to a patient in need,” the post stated.
The Department of Opthalmology of said hospital has expressed gratitude to the first corneal donor. Its Corneal Retrieval Team handed over a Certificate of Appreciation to the family during the wake of the donor.
“This remarkable outcome means that, through one family’s selfless decision during a time of protound loss, two individuals will be given the opportunity to regain their sight and experience a renewed quality of life.”
“To the donor’s family, thank you for choosing to give the gift of sight. Your loved one’s legacy lives on through the lives that will be forever changed by this generous act. The Department of Ophthalmology is deeply honored to have been entrusted with this gift, and we remain committed to advancing corneal donation and restoring vision to those in need.”
Under the partnership arrangements with the Eye Bank, one cornea went to JBL while the other was sent to another institution to benefit a patient in need.
JBL hospital executives had acknowledged the role of the Eye Bank in certifying the cornea which has led to the successful delicate procedure.
The Eye Bank has been tapped for processing, evaluation, and preparation of corneal and scleral transplantation procedures.
