The Pampanga government, together with the national government agencies and volunteers, have deployed oil spill booms off the waters of Pampanga to protect its fishing industry.
Pampanga Governor Dennis Pineda said the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, Provincial Government Environment and Natural Resources Office, Philippine Coast Guard, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and volunteers cooperated to make the oil spill booms from coconut waste products and plastic bottles.
“Sinimulan na po naming inilatag ang mga oil spill booms para maiwasan ang pagtagas ng langis mula sa lumubog na water tanker sa Limay, Bataan,” he said.
“Ginagawa po natin ang floating harang para protektahan ang multi-billion fishing industry ng Pampanga,” Pineda added.
An oil tanker with 1.5 million liters of industrial oil sank off the waters of Limay, Bataan during the height of Typhoon Carina and “habagat” late last month.
Several areas in Bataan and Cavite have declared a state of calamity due to the effect of the oil spill from the ill-fated M/T Terranova.
