Pampanga Governor Lilia “Nanay” Pineda has led the opening of the Governor’s Cup Inter-Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament 2026.
Now in its second year, the kick-off ceremony was held on Wednesday, June 10, at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center.
The Provincial Information Office (PIO) said that 19 cities and municipalities are participating in the tournament. They include Angeles City, City of San Fernando, Mabalacat City, Apalit, Arayat, Bacolor, Floridablanca, Guagua, Lubao, Macabebe, Magalang, Mexico, Minalin, Porac, San Simon, Santa Ana, Santa Rita, Santo Tomas, and Sasmuan.
Vice Governor Dennis “Delta” Pineda, who was also present at the event, said the tournament also serves as a platform to discover promising young basketball players who may later be given opportunities to pursue their education through sports.
“We are starting again because we want to discover young players whom we can help — those who have a future in basketball and may be recruited by universities as varsity players, giving them the opportunity to continue their studies,” he said.
The provincial government thanked businessman Manny Pangilinan for providing ₱1 million in financial assistance in support of the provincial basketball tournament.
Governor Pineda also provided each team with ₱100,000 in support funds, which may be used by the players for their needs throughout the tournament.
