The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) supports the call for an independent and comprehensive investigation into the soil erosion incident at the area of Tipo High-tech Eco Park last August 29, 2026 which claimed two lives.
This is in response to the concerns made by the Save Subic Bay Coalition regarding the recent tragedy.
In a statement, the SBMA said a probe will establish the facts and identify measures that are necessary to prevent untoward incidents such as this.
SBMA also said it is dedicated to reviewing existing policies and practices, in cooperation with relevant government agencies and stakeholders, to strengthen safeguards, enhance monitoring, and enforce standards fairly and effectively, especially in the advent of climate change that had brought extreme weather disturbances worldwide.
It also agrees that responsible development is not only possible but essential, and that strict adherence to regulations, thorough engineering and environmental assessments, diligent inspections, and transparent permitting processes must be non-negotiable foundations in all projects.
“Yes, Subic Bay is not only an investment destination but also a home to vibrant communities and irreplaceable natural ecosystems. Hence, we strongly affirm our commitment to balancing economic growth with the protection of our forests, waterways, mangroves, and coastal areas,” SBMA said.
As stewards of Subic Bay’s future, SBMA said it remains conscientiously aware of its responsibility to promote development that is safe, transparent, responsible, and sustainable.
“The SBMA is dedicated to upholding the principles of good governance and environmental stewardship to ensure that Subic Bay continues to thrive as a place where people, nature, and progress coexist harmoniously,” the statement further said.
It also expressed gratitude to the Save Subic Bay Coalition and all stakeholders for their advocacy and partnership in this vital mission and remain resolute in our commitment to “do things right” in building a better future for Subic Bay Freeport.
“With sincere and profound concern, we extend our deepest sympathies to the families and communities gravely affected by this unfortunate event,” SBMA said.
The SBMA said it shares the commitment to ensuring that development within the Subic Bay Freeport Zone is conducted with the utmost regard for public safety, environmental protection, and sustainable progress.
