Tarlac, the Refuge of the Race (Kanlungan ng Lahi) did not only produce the best leaders of the country. It is also here where some of the country’s best artists come from.
The recent announcement of National Artists had Gregorio Brilliantes in it. He is the second in the illustrious list to have come from Tarlac. He joins Carlos P. Romulo in the prestigious award. Both of them have been recognized in the field of Literature. They both come from Camiling town.
In Tarlac, the art scene is so lively. Year in and year out, regular art exhibits take place. Artists have a permanent exhibition hall at the Diwa Ng Tarlac which was purposely built to showcase the rich culture and heritage of the province. It is an enviable edifice not just by artists themselves but also art patrons.
This coming October 10-18, another exhibit is slated. It will not only feature about 400 regular visual arts creators from many parts of the country but will also feature community participation.
The Art Luzon will bring together 600 crochet makers, comprising mainly of mothers and women in Tarlac province who have been skilled to produce an almost forgotten art form.
They will jointly create the map of Tarlac in a giant crochet piece that will be displayed at Diwa Ng Tarlac.
The Art Luzon is the fifth annual art exhibit led by Tarlac First Lady Melissa Yueng-Yap who herself is a painter and a sculptor.
She is supported by Art Luzon creative director Jared Yokte and the Tarlac Provincial Government through the Provincial Tourism Office.
“We are very happy and proud. Tarlac is really a nice platform of service,” Yueng-Yap said.
She also recognized Tarlac to have great leaders that include two former presidents in Corazon Aquino and son Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino as well as slain Senator Benigno Aquino Jr.
Art Luzon will feature gallery exhibitions, regional art collectives, community-based art, research projects, workshops and public-art installations, expanding beyond the traditional gallery-fair format.
